Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Extension to Agriculture and Natural Resources with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Extension Program Specialist I/II – Crops. Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension program specialists provide educational leadership in the application of knowledge, grounded in research-based science, to help Iowans and agricultural industry prosper.
This position will assist on developing and delivering research-based information and education to benefit Iowa growers. Some information/education delivery will be directly to growers, but the majority of the delivery will be in conjunction with and through agribusinesses serving farmers. Other clientele groups and partners may include educational institutions, governmental agencies, farm and conservation organizations and the mass media.
For this position, educational leadership responsibilities in field crop systems programming will focus on the development, delivery, and support for: crop production; crop protection; soil and water conservation and applied research. This position will participate in grant and contract opportunities and be active in revenue generation. Programmatic leadership is provided through the Agriculture and Natural Resources Crops Team. Subject matter leadership is provided through the College of Agriculture and Life Science's Departments of Agronomy, Entomology, Plant Pathology and Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering.
This position will be filled at either the Extension Program Specialist I or II level based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. In addition to the duties above, an Extension Program Specialist II will be expected to create and deliver more comprehensive and complex communications and outreach materials; identify and implement innovative ways to meet clients' needs; take an active role in the development of interdisciplinary curriculum; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise.
The successful candidate will possess the ability to develop a plan of work based on client needs identification; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with individuals and groups; and ability to establish partnerships with leaders in Iowa agriculture. In order to be successful in the position, the candidate will possess strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience; OR a combination of education and related experience totaling 5 years.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Master's degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Weed or Seed Science, or related field. Additional years of experience. Teaching experience. Experience in the agri-business industry. Experience or training in crop production and protection. Experience communicating with a wide range of audiences, including agricultural clientele and the mass media.
The duties of this position require willingness to work evenings and weekends which will include travel within the area served.
Preference that the successful candidate would live/serve the southeastern or south central portions of Iowa, but is not required.
