The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Statistics in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS). This is a full-time position with a 9-month per year service period.
The University of Washington Tacoma serves a dynamic and culturally diverse population of over 5000 undergraduate and graduate students. A majority of our student population is first generation in college.
The successful candidate will teach existing courses and have the opportunity to further develop our statistics curriculum, particularly by adding new upper-division courses. The candidate will contribute to our young and growing Mathematics major by expanding our applied statistics capacity and will be expected to also support various lower division mathematics classes across the curriculum. Current courses include introductory and advanced statistics serving a population of students in various disciplines across campus, such as psychology, business, economics, environmental sciences, biomedical sciences, health sciences, engineering, and computer science.
They are expected to conduct scholarship of high quality and impact and to involve undergraduate students in their research. Candidates whose scholarship would expand our collaborative, interdisciplinary, community-engaged research are especially encouraged to apply. The Tacoma campus of the University of Washington was founded in 1990 with an interdisciplinary approach at its foundation. The position begins September 16, 2019 and requires an earned doctorate (or foreign equivalent) at the time of appointment in Statistics or a related applied field (such as Biostatistics, Applied Quantitative Analysis, Quantitative Psychology, Quantitative Ecology, Quantitative Business or Economics, or others). Candidates in the final stages of their dissertation may be appointed on an acting basis. The successful candidate will be an intellectually expansive scholar with a proven record in applied statistics research and teaching.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to working with diverse student populations and effectively support students underrepresented in STEM-related fields, provide mentoring and research opportunities for undergraduates, build community connections, and integrate evidence-based and inclusive pedagogical techniques into undergraduate mathematics teaching and learning. Candidates should have a strong research agenda from any area of applied statistics, in or outside of academia.
