The Physical Science Laboratory Support Technician provides and coordinates instructional support to science teaching laboratories with a primary focus on physics and chemistry. This position provides professional and technical support requiring a knowledge of physics and chemistry, including respective equipment, materials, techniques and procedures.
Under the general direction of the Science Lab Manager the Physical Sciences Technician completes lab set-ups, maintains organized lab rooms and preparation rooms, assists other technicians, and coordinates with faculty to modify, adapt, or implement new experiments and demonstrations. The position may assist with a variety of other science-related undergraduate courses, research-based courses, and community outreach programs.

ESSENTIALS FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL DUTIES
Prepare equipment, material, and chemical solutions for physics and chemistry lab courses.
Coordinate use of assigned space, provide instructional lab support, manage prep rooms, and maintain adequate equipment, materials and supplies.
Construct and test demonstrations, equipment, and lab experiments.
Develop, maintain, and update the physics lecture demonstration inventory and manage the website catalog.
Advise faculty of potential problems with existing programs or lab experiments.
Operate and perform routine maintenance, calibration, and repair on laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment; train students and faculty in the safe use of equipment/instruments; develop standard operating procedures for experiments and instruments.
Monitor laboratories to ensure compliance with safety policies; assist in the development of safe laboratory procedures.
Estimate quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed.
Provide additional support to other science courses, science-related research, and community outreach.
Continue to professionally develop in order to support changing laboratory needs.
May direct the work of student employees.
Perform additional duties as required.
Bachelor's Degree with a major study in physics, chemistry, or equivalent STEM degree from an accredited college or university.
Two years full-time experience as a scientific lab technician or equivalent experience in a graduate program.
Experience working with chemicals in a laboratory setting; handling chemical and biological waste.
Experience working with and knowledge of safe laboratory practices.
Ability to prioritize tasks and projects, manage and organize supplies, and multi-task to assist others.
Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
Experience supporting project-based or research-based labs in physics and/or chemistry.
Experience working with advanced instrumentation including lasers, microscopes, and chemical analyzers.
Experience working in a higher education laboratory environment.
Experience with the design and construction of laboratory materials and equipment.
Significant coursework in both physics and chemistry.
Ability to lift to 30lbs.
Ability to work on feet for an extended period.
