Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University is seeking applications for an Agricultural Specialist II – ISU Dairy Farm Nutrition Supervisor. This position is responsible to provide nutritional needs for the 800 head herd at the ISU's Dairy Farm, and manages around $1.2 million of annual feed inventory. Additionally this position works closely with principal investigator's in the precision of research rations along with knowledge of feed stuff production and procurement to allow for the harvest and purchasing of high quality ingredients at the lowest possible cost.
Under minimal supervision of the dairy farm manager, this position oversees quality assurance of feed mixing protocols, which includes purchasing, evaluating and maintaining the quality of feed ingredients. Additional responsibilities include analyzing markets for optimal feed and hay prices; working collaboratively with faculty and staff conducting research; and communicating special dietary concerns to facility staff and students. The incumbent will review and recognize problems with respect to forage based diet and health issues while making appropriate recommendations to remedy the situation; consults with vendors to order replacement parts; and schedules repairs in a timely manner. Other responsibilities will include facility and equipment maintenance and providing supervision to a number of students, for which includes hiring, training and evaluation.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently and as a member of the dairy farm supervisory team; possess excellent communication skills both oral and written; ability to utilize current computer applications (e.g., email, spreadsheets and word processing); the ability to follow and develop farm management protocols for research experiments; and possess the ability to remain current with motors, hydraulics, and electrical and mechanical systems to maintain and direct repairs on farm equipment This position will have varying hours depending on work load and certain periods of peak times and seasons; it will require some evening, weekend and holiday responsibilities. Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience; OR a combination of education and related experience totaling 5 years.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Degree in Animal Science or related field. Experience in an animal research facility. Experience with feed stuff and nutritional rations. Demonstrated experience with research protocols and data collection.
