This is professional work in the area of Academic Advisement, which falls under the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business. The Academic Advisor supports the overall mission of the School of Business and of Duquesne University, which above all entails a commitment to the educational development, growth, and future success of our students.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Provides academic advisement to students in the School of Business.
Advises majors, evaluates transfer credits, explains graduate programs, prepares students’ schedules, assists in registration, maintains files, and compiles records.
Attends and participates in various business school programs, including some on weekends.
Develops, maintains, and guides students through the Advising Syllabus, which establishes a set of goals and extra-curricular requirements comprising the ‘four-year experience’.
Makes public presentations to students, prospective students and parents, as needed
Interacts with students through letters, e-mail, telephone calls, and personal visits.
Conducts interviews with students and parents concerning academic requirements and standing.
Actively contributes to the strategic planning and continuous improvement process within academic advising
Collaborates with other University offices to improve students’ academic experience and prospects.
Compiles statistics for school reports; prepares reports on Business students.
Assists in coordination of study abroad programs, including potentially traveling with students overseas.
Coordinates and delivers certain specialized classes, particularly those pertaining to student orientation and professional development.
A Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.), with major course work in business, education, counseling or a related field;
Experience in higher education and academic advising;
Knowledge of the techniques and procedures involved in academic counseling;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team;
Ability to work with students in a mentoring and service-oriented manner;
Ability to think strategically and creativity with respect to the operations and programs of academic advising;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, faculty, and others in the University community.
A Master’s degree in business, education, counseling or a related field;
3+ years of experience in higher education academic advising;
Experience with the Banner student information system;
Strong leadership and decision-making skills;
