Essential Job Duties:
This position is to add technical expertise in equipment design, maintenance, electronic characterization and overall lab management. The Research Assistant will create and maintain a laboratory environment to promote excellence in research and learning. The position will work with graduate and undergraduate students and other researchers to facilitate their successful research projects, including helping to understand electronic and vacuum equipment requirements and maintenance, and analysis of experimental results. This person will also oversee general lab facilities, including maintaining a safe work environment for all researchers. The person will work with facilities personnel to keep the laboratory in compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements, including maintaining lab safety or any other required or requested documentation. The Research Assistant will:
Develop, design and conduct one or more small or moderately complex research projects or experiments, review progress, and evaluate results
Write grant proposals that assist in the acquisition of research grant funding
Act as liaison with other departments, organizations or divisions
Formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality; identify potential problems; and recommend and implement solutions
Coordinate data collection and screening and verification of data
Independently formulate research methods and collaborate on options for improving quality
As needed, this position will also perform experimental tests and other tasks as requested by the Pl to support research projects and contracts, including for example, thin film deposition processes, materials characterization, and written and oral report preparation. The Research Assistant will also be required to communicate effectively orally and in writing with industry or other outside researchers, research sponsors, and university staff and officials. This position must be able to respond quickly and effectively with project requirements as requested from the Pl.

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
The candidate must be able to work effectively in a team environment with student researchers, including teaching laboratory best practices, analytical characterization, and other laboratory skills. The candidate must also work effectively with Department staff, including responding to Departmental or University requests as indicated by the lab Pl.
Experience in an academic laboratory working directly with student researchers is also desired.
