Essential Job Duties:
Overview: The Laboratory Supervisor provides continuity in technical/research support and training of personnel in the research group of Professor Leslie A Sombers in the Department of Chemistry, while independently executing fundamental research activities for a single or multiple research project(s).
The division of duties for this position are as follows:
Research Component (75%): Work independently on data collection and analysis. Contribute to research publications, oral presentations, and draft manuscripts. Train laboratory personnel in specialized techniques.
Administrative Component (25%): Maintain documentation for animal research and drug registration in accordance with all federal, state, and university guidelines; act as a liaison to departmental administrative personnel; miscellaneous administrative duties as assigned.
The Laboratory Supervisor will report directly to Professor Leslie Sombers.
Show proficiency in handling and using animals as per protocol
Show proficiency in microelectrode fabrication and voltammetric technique. Take ownership of a research project (or projects).
Manage in-house animals.
Oversee the routine maintenance of laboratory apparatuses (e.g. pipets, balances, electrochemical equipment); Write technical manuals for laboratory research tools.
Act as the technical point of contact for equipment purchases, and serve as a liaison to sales personnel.
Maintain all documentation for animal research and drug registration in accordance with all federal, state, and university guidelines research projects.
Train personnel on various laboratory techniques such as surgery, histological tissue preparation, carbon-fiber microelectrode construction, and fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV).
Provide technical and administrative assistance for grant proposal and manuscript preparation.
Act as Research group liaison to departmental administrative personnel (representing Dr. Sombers).
Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Solid background in neuroscience with experience in animal behavioral research, microdialysis sampling, electrochemistry, electrophysiology, or optogenetic/chemogenetic manipulations would be an advantage.
Superior management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Superior laboratory technique.
Superior oral and written communication skills.
1 year experience in rat handling and surgical procedures.
An M.S. in Neuroscience, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or a related filed with a track record of productivity and innovation.
Exceptional candidates with an undergraduate degree in these disciplines will also be considered.
