Essential Job Duties:
This Facility Safety Engineer position is part of the Occupational Safety Section of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. The incumbent is responsible and accountable for developing a robust safety program for the Facilities Division that includes appropriate metric capture, tracking and analysis. This position will have direct access to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities. The Facility Safety Engineer will manage Facilities safety programs to include: confined space, lockout/tag out, asbestos, lead, machine guarding, hoist and crane, electrical safety, OSHA record keeping, personal protective equipment for physical safety, and other program activities associated with occupational safety. Supporting these programs includes: inspecting, monitoring, training, testing, and liaising between Facilities and EHS.
Participates in safety inspection process.
Maintains training for emergency response.
Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Requires a thorough understanding of occupational safety regulations.
Capable of oversight of multiple safety programs covering a large and complex university environment.
Knowledge and competence with lead and asbestos regulations and program management.
Demonstrated capability to assess weaknesses in solutions and approaches to assigned programs, resulting in continuous improvement to these programs, along with the ability to provide technical leadership to management.
Ability to both critique and clearly communicate safety concerns regarding a wide range of activities including but not limited to, maintenance and construction work practices.
Requires well developed communication skills and reputation as a team player.
Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Prefer mixed experience including regulatory, industry, and lab spanning at least 5 years involving a variety of situations / challenges.
CSP, asbestos/lead certification preferred but not required.
Required license or certification:
A valid North Carolina driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.
