Essential Job Duties:
The Counselor is responsible for providing and managing confidential counseling services to veterinary students, graduate students and house officers in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The Counselor also provides consultation to university administrators, faculty and staff with regard to student and house officer well-being.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Provide assessment and counseling services to veterinary students, graduate students and house officers
Provide crisis intervention services for veterinary students, graduate students and house officers
Provide coaching to students on learning skills and screen for learning problems
Refer students to additional campus and community resources as needed
Provide educational programs on psychological issues and wellness for the college community, with frequent collaboration with the Clinical Counselor in the Terry Center
Serve as primary back-up for after-hours on-call emergency service for students of the CVM
Administrative duties include but are not limited to: case documentation, developing statistics on the use of the counseling service and production of an annual report
This position reports to the CVM Assistant Dean of Student Development with a secondary reporting structure to the Director of the NCSU Counseling Center.
Serve on appropriate college and university committees.
Relevant professional degree and licensure in the appropriate clinical field of psychology, social work, or mental health.
Experience working with a broad range of counseling issues including developmental concerns, managing stress and developing resilience, family concerns and other interpersonal issues, learning assistance, grief and loss, and common mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety.
Experience in mental health program development
Excellent clinical and crisis management skills
Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere
Demonstrated abilities in the areas of teaching, writing and professional presentation
Awareness and utilization of best practices and current developments in the field are essential
Established commitment to multicultural competencies and the promotion of a welcoming community for all
Competency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Email
Prior university counseling experience, preferably in a professional or graduate program, is preferred.
Required license or certification:
Appropriate licensure must be obtained/maintained according to NC law.
