The UW Tacoma-Center for Equity & Inclusion has an outstanding opportunity for a Student Retention & Community Development Specialist. Under the direction of the Director for the Center for Equity & Inclusion, the Student Retention & Community Development Specialist is responsible for developing, maintaining, and assessing a comprehensive array of retention and advocacy programs appropriate for the University of Washington Tacoma campus. The desired outcome is student success, retention, and completion of degrees and their development as engaged citizens and leaders. The position is charged with developing and implementing cohort-based programs/initiatives using a learning community model designed to achieve this outcome through a managing a portfolio that includes the following:Develop, launch and manage a high impact cohort-based program that provides students with opportunities for academic success, career development, identity development and leadership development. This program will enable students to explore their personal, social, and future professional identities, to apply their foundational (community-based) and acquired (classroom) knowledge across curricular and co-curricular contexts, and to cultivate mentoring and coaching relationships faculty, professional staff, local community members. The specialist will embed opportunities for students to examine the relevance of social justice focused issues as they participate in undergraduate research, internships, study abroad and community-based learning. Coordinate innovative program initiatives that serve to help students from historically underrepresented populations acquire campus navigation skills and facilitate their transition and success through the creation of community, leadership and identity development. In partnership with the CEI team, Student & Enrollment Services, and other faculty and staff who lead Student Success initiatives at UWT, implement program offerings that might include welcome programs, alumni-student interfaces, history/heritage month events, identity-based leadership development programs and year-end celebrations.Support student-driven programs and training initiatives that foster learning and engagement around social justice-focused issues related to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion and other intersecting social identities with the goal of fostering inclusiveness within and across affinity-based student groups and preparing students to lead and thrive in an increasingly diverse and interdependent global society.Cultivate and maintain working relationships with internal and external agencies and constituencies for the purpose of expanding pathways and resources for students from historically underrepresented communities and to support the delivery of community and service learning opportunities for all students.Conduct personal advising meetings with students to help them develop an integrated academic and social plan to support their well-being and success.Work with established boards, committees, registered students organizations, and others to garner input and receive feedback on the priority, focus, and effectiveness of CEI programs and servicesLead assessment and evaluation activities within the Student Retention and Community Development Specialist's portfolio and will provide support for ongoing assessment efforts within the Center for Equity & Inclusion. Develop and sustain educational resources for students, student organizations, faculty and staff that increase opportunities for education, self-discovery, other-discovery and avenues for exploring difficult issues of identity group membership, injustice, discrimination, and prejudice. Prepare manuals, reports, grant proposals and other documents to further mentoring program goals and document efforts and achievements, as requested by the CEI Director and the Assistant Chancellor for Equity & Inclusion (ACEI). Work closely with the Equity and Inclusion team to enhance opportunities for all students to explore issues of equity and diversity, and to increase student success and retention at UW Tacoma, in alignment with the UW Tacoma mission, vision, and goals. REQUIREMENTS:Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Social Justice, or a related field. 3 years of direct experience working with college access and student success programs, such as TRiO, retention projects, leadership development initiatives, service-learning initiatives, mentoring programs, etc. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing programs that promote student learning about identity and difference within the context of a multicultural society. Experience in providing leadership development and advising support to identity-based student organizations. Experience and interest in working with students of color, LGBT-identified students, and multiple, intersecting identity student issues.Possess sound judgment, maturity, sensitivity to the complexities of identity development, and passion for effecting change in dynamic multicultural environments. Knowledge of diversity theories and practices, and needs assessment and evaluation in higher education. Background in event programming and implementation. Strong oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated self-starter with excellent critical thinking skills and ability to assess needs, lay out plans and follow through. Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators and local community members. Successful experience in a work setting that requires teamwork and cooperative working relationships.Ability to work autonomously and make independent decisions. Demonstrated success with supervising students and volunteers. Strong demonstrated proficiency in use of technology to support CEI administrative functions as well as promote learning and engagement in and outside of the classroom Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.DESIRED:Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Social Justice Education, Counseling or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education. Demonstrated success developing and implementing learning community programs in a higher education setting.
