Position Summary: CSUSB invites applications and nominations to fill the position of Director of Education Abroad of the College of Extended and Global Education (CEGE). The College of Extended and Global Education is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to lead Education Abroad at California State University, San Bernardino. Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College of Extended and Global Education (CEGE), the incumbent is responsible for providing leadership and oversight to the Education Abroad department consistent with the overall mission and priorities of the College and the University. As a member of the college leadership team, the incumbent plays a key role in advancing college initiatives and improving services. Primary Duties include (but are not limited to):
The incumbent oversees the daily operations of the Education Abroad department, develops administrative policies and procedures; collaborates with academic and administrative units across the university to develop and deliver education abroad programs and to increase student participation in them. The incumbent also serves as campus resource to provide consultation and training for campus partners to enhance education abroad capacity.
The incumbent keeps current with trends in education abroad to ensure quality of services and programs and pursues innovative strategies for continual improvement and for promoting education abroad.
Articulating a strategic vision for education abroad and executing the vision to include comprehensive engagement, management, and training and development of EA staff.
Overseeing a variety of exchange, faculty-led and 3rd party provider programs to include developing support mechanisms for program participants and leaders, and managing relationships with partners abroad.
Providing oversight and support for education abroad programming, including risk, health and safety aspects. In cooperation with other campus units, coordinating health and safety projects, resources and services, including study abroad emergency preparedness and response plans.
Serving as first responder to all emergencies or perceived crises abroad.
Developing and implementing effective education abroad policies and procedures.
Coordinating student exchange partnerships and serving as a liaison with external affiliate programs to maintain exchange balances. Initiating, reviewing and updating related memorandums of understanding or agreements.
Collaborating with other CEGE departments to develop and oversee inbound student exchange services and support.
Promoting and marketing education abroad participation and increasing the diversity of its participants with an emphasis on working with non-traditional, underrepresented, and/or economically vulnerable populations.
Defining strategies to increase student access to education abroad, including scholarships.
Promoting best practices in education abroad curriculum design, assessment, and integration with academic programs of study.
Comprehensive data management/visualization, and demonstrated experience with related technologies.
Education & Experience:
Master's degree in a related field; preferably in Counseling, Education or International Studies.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible management-level experience in the area of education abroad within an institution of higher education; including three (3) years of supervisory experience. A doctoral degree in a related field can be substituted for three (3) years of work experience.
Experience in the development of education abroad programs and exchanges.
Active involvement with NAFSA and/or other appropriate professional associations.
Ability to communicate effectively in a language other than English is a plus.
Experience with Terra Dotta software to manage education abroad.
Must possess and maintain a valid passport.
Must have the ability to travel, domestically and internationally.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of best practices in risk management, crisis response and management, conflict resolution, program development, program assessment.
Skill and Ability to:
Skills in project management, including program design, implementation and evaluation.
Experience in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Experience in program marketing, recruitment, and assessment.
Creative expertise necessary for continued development of campus internationalization through education abroad, cultural outreach events and activities.
Strong organizational skills with proven ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
Ability in problem identification, reasoning, forming solutions.
Ability to create and maintain positive relationships with a wide range of constituents, including faculty, students, colleagues, administrators and institutional partners.
Ability to serve students with their various needs and be culturally sensitive and globally competent.
Professional verbal/written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy and with multicultural competencies.
