The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The department currently employs 900 people who work at the award-winning University of Washington Medical Center (ranked among the top medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report), Harborview Medical Center (the region's only Level I Trauma center, known for innovations and excellence in trauma care and its centers of emphasis: Trauma, Burn, Neurosciences, AIDS/STD CARER, and mentally- and medically- vulnerable populations.), and many other clinical and research facilities in the area. The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a PART-TIME (50%) MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST 1. The general duties of this position include:Prepare, evaluate, and report direct smears including, but not limited to, Gram stains, KOH preps, Pneumocystis DFA stains, Auramine-O stains, Kinyoun stains and Wright/Giemsa. Perform various tests for the identification of bacteria, yeast, mold and parasites on the routine benches and in the Molecular Diagnostic Division per laboratory protocols. Perform susceptibility tests (disk diffusion, E-test and MIC) on pathogens per laboratory protocols. Perform various serological procedures including PCR, EIA and latex agglutinations. Rotate and maintain competency in all sections where he/she has been trained.Understand and operate a variety of laboratory equipment (i.e., automated blood culture system, mass spectrometry instrument, automated susceptibility system, automated urinalysis instrument, microscopes, biological safety cabinet and anoxomat) and is able to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting. Exhibit a working knowledge of the laboratory information system software and can teach it to others.Understand quality control requirements and follows policies to validate results.Ability to work independently to manage average workloads and know when to request assistance in case of heavier workloads.Perform work accurately and precisely and recognize, correct, and document errors when they occur. Interact with healthcare providers in a professional manner. Know what results are critical or reportable and follow the policies and procedures for reporting them to appropriate medical staff, epidemiology, or Public Health Laboratory.Assist with the evaluation of new tests/equipment and research projects as required. Instruct new employees, medical laboratory students, medical students, residents, and fellows in routine procedures and is patient and tolerant with them.Continue education and maintain certification by attending Lab Medicine seminars, in-services, staff meetings and/or by reading scientific journals and participating in CAP proficiency surveys.This position will be offered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate. REQUIREMENTS:MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST TRAINEE:Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience AND eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Science certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire. Failure of Medical Laboratory Science graduates to attain certification within one year of date of hire will result in a recommendation for termination.MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST 1:Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience, AND Current Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division, AND One year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee. Up to one year of on-the-job experience performing clinical testing in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count towards the experience requirement.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, especially at Harborview Medical Center. In addition, less frequent work effort will be required at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions.Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.Must be able to meet with all shifts on a regular basis.This position provides opportunities to work in a fast-paced, challenging, diverse and rewarding environment.
