About the Position
As a Sheet Metal Mechanic you will perform journey-level work in forming, fabricating, and installing of sheet metal components. Tasks include:
Fabricating, installing, maintaining, and repairing stovepipes, grates, guards, chimney caps, conductor heads and pipes, downspout gutters, machine guards, dishwashing sinks, metal roofing, ventilators, window guards and screens, metal hoppers, radiator shields, and boiler stacks.
Installing, maintaining, and repairing galvanized metal and corrugated roofing and skylight flashing or stainless steel equipment.
Using arc and acetylene welding equipment, brakes, forming rods, squaring shears, elbow machines, bar folders, emery wheels, and power punches.
Repairing metal windows and doors; form and weld, solder, braze, or silver solder a variety of metal objects, fixtures, equipment, and structures.
Operating hand and power brakes, forming rods, squaring shears, elbow machines, folding machines, emery wheels, power punches, and other power and hand tools.
Estimating quantity of material and hours of labor required to perform various jobs.
Servicing and installing fire boxes, ventilation and heating ducts.
Inspecting ventilation and exhaust systems for fire hazard, hazardous fumes, and general effectiveness of operation.
• Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of sheet metal trade; safety pre-cautioning; and sheet metals and their characteristics and uses.
• Ability to do TIG, MIG, stick and acetylene welding, soldering and brazing; work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs; and use hand and power tools. May be required to take a welding test.
• Demonstrated experience or ability in doing work in commercial and/or institutional settings.
• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a sheet metal mechanic, OR Full journey status as a sheet metal mechanic in a union, OR Four years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Ability to read and understand written information and instructions.
• Ability to communicate clearly.
• Ability to maintain and use hand and power tools safely as required for the trade.
• Experience working in sensitive situations such as: operational offices, classrooms, dorm rooms, rest rooms, etc.
• Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work in order to drive a state-owned vehicle for travel to work locations.
• Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to perform daily work tasks independently under limited supervision.
• Possess technical accuracy and record keeping skills.
• Ability to work with computer hardware and software required to track work orders and record time worked.
• Possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a friendly and cooperative manner with students, staff, and faculty at all levels of the organization and in contacts with the public.
• Ability to manage time well and work under pressure situations with tight schedules and deadlines to complete projects.
• Possess and maintain ASME Section IX welding certification with AWS B2.1-1-205-96 (R2007) in accordance with ASME B31.1. UA-21 certification is acceptable.
• Working knowledge of the painting field obtained in a commercial or industrial environment.
• Knowledge of applicable Washington Administrative Code (WAC) regulations, and local building and plumbing codes.
• Knowledge of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) rules and regulations, standard job safety rules, proper use of a face respirator.

This position is part of bargaining unit B and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with the Washington Federation of State Employees.
