UW Medicine's programs include the delivery of advanced medical diagnostics and treatment services, clinical support for the education of medical students and graduate and postgraduate trainees, and maintenance of one of the largest and most advanced university-based basic and clinical research programs in the United States. UW Medicine's programs also include the provision of medical care to underserved and disadvantaged persons and maintaining the economic vitality of UW Medicine's owned and managed health system. UW Medicine's delivery of its core programs is via a complex organization including the School of Medicine, University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, Airlift Northwest, University of Washington Physicians, Children's University Medical Group as well as affiliated organizations including the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Seattle Children's, Veterans Affairs, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, LifePoint-UW Medicine Healthcare Holding Company and the Pacific Northwest Clinically Integrated Network.The UW Medicine clinical business affairs office is responsible for leading key internal and external business initiatives, serving as liaison with other UW offices, and representing UW Medicine in critical university and external meetings and discussions. The Director is accountable directly to the Senior Director for the management of UW Medicine clinical business affairs to support the activities of UW Medicine leadership, including the UW Medicine Strategic Clinical Business Officer and Associate Vice President for Medical Affairs; the Chief Business Officer, UW Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs; the Chief Health System Officer, UW Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Washington; the Chief Financial Officer, UW Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Washington; the Chief Medical Officer, UW Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Washington; and the CEO, UW Medicine, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine, University of Washington.RESPONSIBILITIESThe Director is accountable directly to the Senior Director for the management of UW Medicine business affairs and supports the activities of UW Medicine leadership identified above. Representative elements of the Director's duties and responsibilities include the following:External Business RelationshipsThe Director participates in the development, negotiation and maintenance of UW Medicine contractual relationships with external entities, including the following:Serve as a UW Medicine representative to coordinate, negotiate and document business arrangements with other healthcare institutions and entities;Work in close partnership with the UW Medicine Regional Business Officer and other UW Medicine leaders to support external relationships;Develop and manage UW Medicine non-payer contracting templates in coordination with other UW Medicine and UW offices;Develop, analyze and negotiate complex business transactions including mergers, acquisitions, strategic affiliations and joint venture partnerships with other healthcare entitiesOther special projects as assigned.Internal Business ProcessesThe Director provides leadership and direction in policy formulation and implementation in areas involving UW Medicine faculty and staff, and UW Medicine and University business processes including the following:Participate in the development of UW Medicine policies and procedures and in particular policies that impact hospital operations.Provide leadership and administrative support to UW Medicine hospital clinical integration and leadership activities.Regulatory Compliance and Legal AffairsThe Director participates in the management of UW Medicine regulatory compliance efforts and provides technical advice related to:Legal and regulatory compliance matters that impact UW Medicine and its entities and affiliated entities;Compliance with federal laws and regulations, Washington State laws and regulations, and UW rules and regulations related to all areas of UW Medicine operations;Management of issues unique to business transactions and all applicable fraud and abuse prevention regulationsAssuring compliance with healthcare regulations in complex business transactions including oversight of work performed by other members' of the unit.JOB CHARACTERISTICSThe Director is responsible for strategic involvement in UW Medicine business affairs, personnel policy, compliance, and legal affairs. The Director is required to possess a comprehensive knowledge of:UW Medicine practices, policies, and key issues impacting its business and legal affairs;Federal and State laws and regulations and UW rules, regulations and policies affecting UW School of Medicine faculty, staff, programs and business affairs.Structuring health care business ventures in compliance with applicable regulations.The Director will have frequent written and oral interactions with senior executives and professional staff within UW Medicine and UW.EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSA Master's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration and/or Law or a related field of graduate study is required.WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSA minimum of 7 years of senior-level experience preferably in an academic medical center or public university setting is required.
