Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering have an outstanding opportunity for a Research Engineer (Research Scientist/Engineer 1).This position supports research in the interdisciplinary Molecular Information Systems Research Laboratory, working independently with limited supervision and guidance from the Principal Investigators and other more senior members of the lab.This lab supports a funded research project that seeks to explore ways of building computer systems with silicon-based and biological parts. Specific focus is on the identification of systematic design rules or the de novo construction of hybrid silicon and biological circuits with DNA. The primary purpose of position is to work on a digital microfluidics platform. The Research Engineer is responsible for assisting with designing fluidics setups, electronic systems, simple mechanical systems, control software development, as well as providing engineering support for other members of the lab. RESPONSIBILITIES:This position includes a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to the following:*Improve upon a base design of a digital microfluidics platform; revise and build upon existing electronics systems to enhance platform reliability, modularity and scalability*Engineer mechanical systems to support a variety of platform functionalities*Investigate methods to interface platform with existing technologies (e.g. liquid handling technologies)*Perform minor maintenance and repair of laboratory apparatus and instruments*May review relevant literature and contribute data for reports and publications*Attend research group meetings and area seminars*Perform related duties as requiredREQUIREMENTS: *Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a related field*1 year of related experience*Experience designing, developing and debugging printed circuit boards (PCBs) and associated hardware*Experience designing electronics and control systems and working with embedded systems *Ability to collect data in a consistent, reliable and accurate manner*Experience writing code in a popular programming language (e.g. Python, C, C++)*Experience writing scripts for data analysis *Strong organizational and communication skills; experience ordering and organizing lab equipment and supplies*Demonstrated ability to work as part of a diverse and collaborative team *Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills*Demonstrated problem-solving skills, strong detail orientation and ability to adeptly manage multiple deadline priorities*Desire to learn and willingness to take calculated risks to drive innovationEquivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.Application Process:The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
