The University of Pikeville is actively seeking a dynamic and creative professional interested in leading and directing the University’s academic excellence initiatives. Under direction of the Dean of Student Success, the Director of Academic Excellence is responsible for providing academic support services and programming for students with a range of academic abilities including honors level, academically at-risk, and first-generation students. This includes success strategies, learning skills, time management, and academic assistance outside the classroom for diverse students with varied schedules that includes many athletes.
Provide leadership direction including developing, planning, goal setting, implementation, evaluation and accountability for academic support services and programming.
Supervises and coordinates academic support services such as tutoring, supplemental instruction, writing center, student success courses, and other student academic learning services outside of the classroom.
Collaborate with Center of Student Success on developing and implementing programming and processes such as academic recovery, study skills, Motivational Mondays, etc.
Collaborate with Admissions, Family Connections, and others to integrate and offer academic support services as part of the onboarding process for new students and continuing students.
Develop and implement a tracking and assessment system for student use of all academic support services.
Develop and implement regular training and workshops in conjunction with UPIKE Professional Development for faculty, administrators, staff, and work-study students.
Collaborates with data management constituencies at UPIKE such as Institutional Research to provide student usage data needed for the early alert system, academic recovery systems, student success tracking and retention.
Provides regular reports for assessment and planning purposes.
Develops and administers the budget for all programs related to academic support services.
Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate the work performance of assigned personnel.
Writes grant proposals as part of a team focused on academic success.
Plan and coordinate research projects related to areas of responsibility and prepare a variety of research related reports.
Participate in shared governance through service on planning and/or operations committees and task forces.
Perform other related activities as assigned.
Position requires daily contact with co-workers, supervisor, students, faculty, and staff in order to advise and promote student success and retention. These relationships are maintained through e-mail, fax, telephone, and person-to-person contact.
Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in education, counseling, or related field is required; PhD preferred.
Five (5) years academic support services, student success, and/or advising experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Minimum of three to five years of progressive responsibility as a leader and/or manager and managing a team to achieve goals.
Experience tutoring, mentoring, or counseling experience working with students with a range of academic abilities including honors level, academically at-risk, and first-generation students.
Strong technology skills and experience with tools for scheduling, recording and tracking student data, assessment of student outcomes, and date analysis.
Experience with various tutoring models and supplemental instruction (SI).
Experience with the use of educational technology for support and proficiency in the use of a Learning Management System (LMS).
Demonstrated knowledge of effective practices in academic support services.
Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state laws relating FERPA and HIPPA as pertaining to academic support programs.
Demonstrated knowledge of leadership and management principles and techniques
Demonstrated knowledge of accounting, budgeting and fiscal reporting.
Demonstrated knowledge of due process for resolving student and employee complaints or issues.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative internal and external relationships with broad constituencies.
Demonstrated ability to use appropriate technology for data tracking and reporting.
Demonstrated ability to implement innovation in education support processes.
Demonstrated ability to supervise area coordinators and student workers.
Demonstrated ability to relate to and empathize with the needs of students.
Demonstrated ability to exercise group leadership skills, which emphasize collaboration, consensus building, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
