The UW School of Oceanography is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the research group of Dr. Georgy Manucharyan on a project devoted to exploring submesoscale sea ice-ocean interactions in marginal ice zones using modeling, theoretical, and/or remote sensing approaches. This position is full-time (100% FTE), 12-months/year, with an initial term appointment of one year (12 months) that is renewable upon satisfactory performance for a total period of 2-3 years. The start date is negotiable and is available from June 15, 2019.
This project will make progress in understanding of sea ice interactions with mesoscale and submesoscale ocean variability from mechanical and thermodynamical perspectives. The research associate's work could include dynamical analysis of an existing high-resolution ocean-ice model, development of idealized numerical experiments to test various hypothesis, theoretical considerations or analysis of remote sensing datasets. Communicating the results by writing and publishing scientific manuscripts and giving presentations will be a central part of this project. The research project is in collaboration with the Andrew Thompson's research group at the California Institute of Technology. In addition, there will be opportunities for the research associate to engage with the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative by Office of Naval Research on the topic of "Mathematics and Data Science for Improved Physical Modeling and Prediction of Arctic Sea Ice".

Required: A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in oceanography, fluid dynamics or a related field is required. In addition to interests in physical oceanography, the successful candidate for this position will have a strong physical, mathematical, and/or computational background; programming experience in at least one general purpose language; demonstrated written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with individuals from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.
Desired: Additional areas of expertise could include submesoscale ocean physics, ocean modeling, and/or remote sensing. The research associate will be expected to collaborate with project investigators and other researchers.
