The Geology Department presently has 14 faculty members with teaching and research fields that include igneous and metamorphic processes, tectonics and structural geology, geophysics, surficial processes and geomorphology, hydrogeology and engineering geology, science education, paleontology, stable isotope geochemistry, sedimentology and stratigraphy, and planetary geoscience. Our department includes a large (150 majors) undergraduate program, and a vibrant MS program with 30 graduate students. The goal of the program is to help students develop into confident, thoughtful, ethical scientists ready to address the growing challenges affecting our planet through the study of the geosciences.
About the Position
The Geology Department at WWU invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position with specialty in Igneous Petrology to begin Sept 16, 2020. We seek individuals who are enthusiastic about teaching and who will establish a vigorous research program, and are particularly interested in those who will combine field and analytical, experimental or modeling approaches in their research, and who will involve undergraduate and Masters-level students in their research.
The ideal candidate will enhance our existing strengths in geoscience teaching and research by developing new courses and research avenues in igneous petrology. Broad areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the timescales of magmatic processes, the evolution of the continental crust, mantle, oceanic lithosphere/ocean island/mid-ocean ridge processes, the recycling of elements and volatiles within arc magmas and subduction systems, and links between tectonic and magmatic processes.
Teach or contribute to teaching field-based courses in petrology and field mapping
Participate in service activities of the Geology Department
Fulfill teaching and mentoring responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students
Establish an active research program that can be sustained at a primarily undergraduate institution
Mentor undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) students’ research projects
Seek extramural research funding
PhD in geological sciences or a closely related field, completed at the time of application, or ABD at the time of application. If ABD at the time of application, all degree requirements must be completed by June 15 of the first year of employment.
Evidence of the ability to effectively teach Mineralogy, Petrology, and Earth Materials.
Demonstrated record of, or commitment to, cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds
Demonstrated record of, or commitment to, establishing a high-quality research program in geology that includes mentoring and training of undergraduate and graduate student researchers
Demonstrated record of, or commitment to, obtaining external research funding
Postdoctoral experience and strong research record in appropriate geoscience fields
Teaching experience using student-centered approaches to foster active learning
Evidence of the ability to teach upper-division and graduate courses in Geology
Evidence of the ability to teach field petrology or field mapping
