The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The department currently employs 900 people who work at the award-winning University of Washington Medical Center (ranked among the top medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report), Harborview Medical Center (the region's only Level I Trauma center, known for innovations and excellence in trauma care and its centers of emphasis: Trauma, Burn, Neurosciences, AIDS/STD CARER, and mentally- and medically- vulnerable populations.), and many other clinical and research facilities in the area. The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Trainee.RESPONSIBILITIES:Performs patient testing accurately, precisely and meets test completion deadlines through efficient workload organization Able to work independently and handle heavy workloads calmly and efficientlyUnderstands, operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment including but not limited to the following: chemistry analyzer, slide stainer, hematology analyzer, automated urinalysis system, microscope, hand-held monitoring devices Performs phlebotomy on adult and pediatric patientsPrepares and processes samples for transport and/or testingExhibits excellent customer service and teamwork skillsExhibits working knowledge of laboratory information system software (Sunquest) and EMR (Epic)Is proficient in receiving patients and processing electronic lab ordersAssures quality control requirements are attainedUses knowledge to validate and accept test resultsParticipates in quality improvement/quality assurance programsProficient in problem solvingIs knowledgeable of laboratory safety and proper precautions when dealing with bio-hazardous, radioactive, corrosive, explosive and flammable materialsOversees the work of Clinical Laboratory Technicians and Phlebotomists in the absence of Lead or MLS2Professionally interacts with doctors and nurses regarding laboratory results and interpretation Must be able to communicate laboratory status and work well with co-workers, supervisors and facultyProvides training of new employees or students as delegated by supervisory staffMonitors laboratory inventoryMakes and verifies quality of reagentsArrives and leaves work at proper times Uses sick-leave correctlyFlexes work schedule as necessary to cover late shiftsMay need to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements (R2, Hall Health, UWMC, HMC etc)Performs other duties as requiredThis position will be offered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.Requirements for MLS Trainee:Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experienceANDEligible to take the Medical Laboratory Science certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire. Failure of Medical Laboratory Science graduates to attain certification within one year of date of hire will result in a recommendation for termination.Requirements for MLS1:Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experienceANDCurrent Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division.ANDOne year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee.
