Initially recognized for incisive studies of the structure and function of proteins, and the mechanisms of enzyme action, the department branched out into a multitude of other areas. These included: developmental biology of flies, fish, frogs, and mice; molecular mechanisms of aging in yeast and mammals; vertebrate visual and immune responses; chromosome dynamics, cell division, DNA replication and repair; energy transduction during photosynthesis; protein secretion and membrane fusion; translational control and regulated protein degradation; protein structure determination by crystallography and NMR spectroscopy; and protein structure prediction and enzyme design. Our diversity of interests guarantees a rich intellectual and educational environment.About the Institute for Protein Design:The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes.The Institute of Protein Design within the Department of Biochemistry currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST 3.The field of research that this postion Research Scientist / Engineer 3 (RES3) in Computer Science is engaged in software engineering of machine learning (ML) algorithms and Rosetta code (including GPU accelerated code) for molecular modeling, protein structure prediction and design. For more detailed information about the Institute for Protein Design please see http://www.ipd.uw.edu/.The RES3 is a key position within the Institute for Protein design, and will be directed at greatly improving the efficiency of Rosetta computational protein structure prediction and protein design.The RES3 position will perform software engineering of specific machine learning (ML) algorithms and Rosetta code for use in GPU accelerated computing. The research activities involves optimization of protein structure prediction with broad range utility for improving the Rosetta molecular modeling and design algorithms for the de novo computational protein design.The primary responsibilities of the RES3 are:Develop new machine learning algorithms for protein structure prediction and design.Communicate with the Rosetta community to solicit and address feedback.Collaborate with other research staff, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on computational protein structure prediction and de novo protein design.Participate in projects with uncertain outcomes requiring analysis from multiple perspectives. Trains others in how to use Rosetta software and protein design computing infrastructure.Manages complex multi-task projects directed at improving computational protein structure prediction and design.Uses expert knowledge and judgment to develop new methods and tools for protein structure prediction and design. In this role, ~90% of the effort will be dedicated to computational algorithm development for protein structure prediction and design. The remaining ~10% of effort will be dedicated to preparing technical reports, publications in scientific journals and presenting project results to stakeholders.Minimum Requirements:Doctoral Degree in Biochemistry, Computational Biology or Computer Science + 3 or more years of experience in related field.Computational protein structure prediction and design with Rosetta, development of machine learning algorithms for protein structure prediction, various software languages and data base architectures, ability to work independently and in teams.Desired:Deep learning algorithm development, Network development, Cross-platform (Linux/Windows/macOS) development, Experience in computational protein structure prediction, and design with Rosetta molecular design and modeling algorithmsApplication Process:The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
