The HMC Orthopedic Trauma Clinic has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time MEDICAL ASSISTANT. Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant (MA) assists the medical and nursing staff by performing delegated tasks that involve direct patient care; technical procedures or monitoring that may be invasive and require skills validations; transportation of patients, supplies and specimens; ordering and stocking of supplies; and maintenance of special equipment, including sterile equipment and set-ups. The MA role may include coordinating the clerical activities and supporting the front desk activities for patient care in the clinic and between clinic visits.
Demonstrates the ability to be organized and effectively prioritizes work tasks for the needs of the clinic
Effectively monitors and manages patient flow within the clinic. Ensures that providers are always aware of the location and status of their patients & their medical records.
Follow Harborview and the Orthopedic Trauma Clinics standards for patient rooming and intake procedures
Take and document vital signs
Communicate with the RN if appropriate, for social, medical or educational concerns
Determine the supplies and equipment needed for the patient visit
Ensure a signed physician order is completed prior to completing specified patient care tasks
Performs direct patient care procedures according to their level of education, certification, and clinic protocol
Under general supervision, removes sutures/staples, dispenses orthopedic devices (crutched, canes, braces, splints), and performs dressing changes as directed by provider/nurse
Promptly alerts nurse/provider of any abnormalities in patient condition
Performs basic laboratory examinations, venipuncture, and 12-lead electrocardiogram including rhythm strips, pregnancy testing, and throat cultures
Provides skilled assistance to providers performing patient care procedures in the clinic
Maintains sterile technique during treatments and special procedures as indicated
Provides accurate, appropriate, and culturally sensitive education to clinic patients
Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age
Maintains infection control standards including hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective attire
Responds appropriately to patients in physical distress or emergency situations
Conduct appointment reminder calls to patients as needed
Work with RNs on Epic in-basket management as needed
Coordinate with Radiology Department for any day-of imaging for patients
Assists with coordination of care including clarifying patient follow-up and scheduling patient appointments
Accurately and thoroughly documents provision of patient care in a timely manner
Completes all Epic charting/encounter notes by the end of the clinic day
Maintains, completes and submits required clinic reports and audits in a timely manner
Demonstrates knowledge of computer skills to include Epic Care, ORCA, EPIC WEB and MINDSCAPE
Performs duties of PSS, office assistants or other support staff as required by clinic needs
Answers telephone calls in a professional manner and directs calls appropriately
Prepares medical record for the clinic visit; reviews record and notes prior to clinic visit. Triage charts for diagnostic to be completed on day of clinic appointment to include completion of writing new x-ray request if appropriate
Responds to patient issues and refers issues as appropriate
Adequately maintains designated levels of supplies in specified areas and assists in the general maintenance of the patient care areas of the clinic
Responsible for ordering and maintaining inventory of general supplies needed for patient care in clinic
Covers MA duties across all 1 West Clinics as needed including After Care and Pain Relief clinics
Assists in the orientation of new staff
Maintains the cleanliness and tidiness of work rooms, and clean and dirty utility rooms
Understands role in an emergency
Follow HIPAA regulations to insure privacy and appropriate sharing of patient information
Demonstrates understanding of billing practices
For clinic distributed supplies such as braces and orthotics – ensure all documentation and billing standards are followed
Participates in staff meetings and ad hoc problem solving work groups
Demonstrated professionalism and courteous behavior to patient, coworkers, and staff
Provide constructive feedback to coworkers to assist with the provision of patient care
Communicate with coworkers in the delivery of patient care.

REQUIREMENTS: Completion of Medical Assistant course accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA); OR High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of experience providing direct patient care in a health care setting. OR Equivalent education / experience.
